ALERT - QUESTION: WHEN IS A GUN CASE NOT A GUN CASE?

ANSWER:  When Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez says it's not.

In October, 2009 the Illinois Supreme Court ruled on Illinois v Diggins where the court determined that the center console in a vehicle counts as a 'case' under Illinois law.  In response, Rep. Harry Osterman (D-14) filed HB5849 to change the law and nullify the court's decision.

How they plan to do this is to add language specifying that the case your firearm is in needs to be specifically designed for the transportation or storage of firearms.  Doesn't sound like a problem, does it?  Why would a person oppose such a 'reasonable', 'common-sense' change?

Why? Because, in the finest tradition of 'gun control' bills, this one includes subjective and loaded language designed to trip up firearm owners and put them at the mercy of prosecutors.  The full language of the change is a case 'designed for the SAFE transportation of firearms'.

Safe?  What does that mean?  Is a zippered, nylon case from your local sporting goods store considered 'safe'?  Not if this bill passes!  Does it have to be a hard case? Plastic? Metal?  Does it require a lock?  Do you really want that decision to be in the hands of the office that supports the Chicago handgun ban

Please call your state representative this week starting Thursday morning and ask them to OPPOSE HB5849.

Remember to be polite, you will likely speak with the representative's secretary that may not share the same political views as those she works for.  Phone calls are more effective if made between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, increasing the chance your call will be answered in person.

You can find contact info for your representative right from the ISRA's legislative page.  If you're not sure who your representative is, please find out at the Illinois State Board of Elections.

You can find up-to-date information on  this bill as well as the ISRA's stance on other bills at the ISRA Legislation page.

The ISRA will continue to advocate for YOUR rights as firearm owners and citizens  but it does not have the support of taxpayer dollars or the Joyce Foundation like the anti-gun efforts have. If you are an ISRA member, we need your continued support. Please make a donation on-line here, or over the phone at 815-635-3198. If you would like to mail or fax a donation, we have a printable form here. Even better would be to sign up friends and/or family members with gift memberships.

If you're not an ISRA member, now is the time. You can join on-line, or over the phone at 815-635-3198. You can download a printable application form here.

Please post this alert to all internet blogs, bulletin and message boards to which you belong. Pass this alert on to your gun owning friends and fellow sporting club members. You can also join us on our FaceBook page or Twitter along with hundreds of other fellow firearm enthusiasts.

ISRA Alert: County County Phone Poll For Gun Control Ordinance Is Still Active

Larry Suffredin and his cohorts on the Cook County Board are up to their old tricks again.

In order to justify passage of gun control ordinances designed to close all gun shops and ban and confiscate most guns owned by citizens of the county, the Cook County Board is conducting a telephone poll where callers can vote for or against the gun control ordinances.

Like everything else in Cook County, this poll is probably rigged. So, it’s very important that you do the following:

  1. Call 1-312 -603-6400 and select Option #1 when prompted. At the next prompt, select Option #1 again. Then, when prompted to vote on the gun control ordinance, press #2.
  2. You should also forward this alert on to all your gun owning friends and have them vote too.
  3. You should also post this alert to any and all Internet bulletin boards or blogs to which you belong.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT OF COOK COUNTY TO VOTE!

Let’s beat Suffredin at his own game! And, save your guns.

From the ISRA:

Wilmette Village Board Meeting - Tuesday, July 22, 7:30pm - 9:30pm Repeal of handgun ban to be voted on, anti-gunners to be in attendance

The Village of Wilmette is expected to vote on a repeal of their handgun ban Tuesday evening.

It is expected that anti-gunners will try to make some attempt to sway the board to keep the ban in place, or to make it difficult and embarrassing to own a handgun in the village.

Here is a link to the meeting agenda. The repeal of the handgun ban is listed at 6.64.

ISRA members that are Wilmette residents or in the area are urged to attend. The Village Hall is located at 1200 Wilmette Avenue.

Let's hope that the Wilmette ban goes the way of the DC ban!

ISRA Statement on Chicago Schools CEO Arne Duncan

ISRA Press Release:
ISRA Statement on Chicago Schools CEO Arne Duncan

CHICAGO, April 2, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

On Tuesday, April 1, 2008, Chicago Schools CEO Arne Duncan stood at a lectern in the Thompson Center Plaza and essentially blamed the state's hunters and sportsmen for the murders of 20 Chicago school children. Duncan made his appearance during a gun control rally sponsored by Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina's Catholic Church. Pfleger is best remembered for his speech at an earlier gun control rally during which he called for the murder of gun shop owners and state legislators who oppose gun control laws.

Interestingly enough, at about the same time that Duncan was delivering his rant against the state's law abiding firearm owners, a report was released in "Catalyst Magazine" that indicates that just 51% of freshmen enrolled in Chicago public high schools stick it out to graduate.

"Studies by the Chicago Police Department indicate that 88% of murders are committed by people with previous criminal records," commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "Likewise, those same reports show that about 76% of murder victims had records as well. Nonetheless, opportunists like Pfleger and Duncan persist in shifting the blame away from failed public policies and towards law-abiding hunters and sportsmen. The gun control measures these people advocate will never succeed in thwarting crime because they totally ignore the criminal element."

"It's ironic that the truth about Duncan's administration was being released just as he was damning the state's law-abiding gun owners," continued Pearson. "Maybe if Duncan did a better job keeping his charges in school, they wouldn't be out on the streets beating, knifing and shooting one another to death. If Duncan had any sense of responsibility at all, he would have been at the microphone apologizing to the people of Illinois for wasting their time and tax dollars. By all rights, Arne Duncan should be returning 49% of his $200,000 annual salary to the Chicago treasury. He's doing half a job -- so he deserves half his pay."

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. Since 1903, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.

ISRA Alert - Cook County Gun Ban

ISRA Alert: GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS

The good news is that rabid gun-hater Larry Suffredin lost his Democratic primary bid for Cook County State’s Attorney. His humiliating 3rd place finish should put the brakes on his aspirations for higher office for a while.

The bad news is that Larry Suffredin still sits as a commissioner on the Cook County Board where he’ll continue to push for a total ban on the sale and possession of firearms in Cook County.

Now that the smoke is clearing after the primary battle, we must continue to fight against the Suffredin county gun grab proposals. Your help is badly needed in this effort.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO HELP SAVE YOUR GUNS

1. Call the Cook County Commissioners listed below and POLITELY inform whoever answers the phone that you are a law abiding firearm owner and that Suffredin’s decisive defeat on Tuesday is a strong message from the people of Cook County that they do not support Suffredin’s gun control package. Politely tell the person on the phone that you would like to see commissioner from that district to vote against any and all gun control proposals that come before the county board.

2. Pass this alert on to all your gun-owning friends and ask them to call the Cook County commissioners as well.

3. Please post this alert to any and all Internet blogs, chats or bulletin boards to which you may belong.

ISRA-PVF Alert for Cook County

WARNING
COOK COUNTY HUNTERS, SPORTSMEN, GUN OWNERS

The most sweeping gun control laws in the nation will soon be voted on by the Cook County Board. Here is what they will do:
  • CLOSE ALL COOK COUNTY GUN SHOPS - Under the ordinance, no gun shop could operate within 1 mile of a school, church, nursing home, or park, and no two shops could be within 15 miles of each other. BOTTOM LINE: All gun shops in Cook County would be ordered to close just after New Years Day.

  • BAN MOST GUN OWNERSHIP - Under the ordinance, all Cook County residents would have to register their guns with the Cook County Sheriff . Now read this very carefully: You could only register guns that are currently registered. If you live in unincorporated Cook County, or in towns that do not currently require registration, then you could not register any guns under the new law and you’d have to surrender your guns to the Sheriff. BOTTOM LINE: Only residents of Chicago and a handful of suburbs would be allowed to keep any guns. The majority of Cook County residents would be forced to surrender their guns to the Sheriff.

  • IMMEDIATE BAN ON HANDGUNS - Under the ordinance, the only handguns that would be allowed in Cook County would be firearms with a “load indicator.” Therefore, all revolvers would be banned as would most semiautomatic pistols. Also, other language in the ordinance would ban semiautomatic shotguns and rifles.

  • NULLIFY LOCAL GUN ORDINANCES - Under the ordinance, home rule authority over firearms would be eliminated with the County Board being in full control of fi rearm regulations.
BOTTOM LINE: You cannot hide from this ordinance no matter where you live in Cook County.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS GUN GRAB?

Larry Suffredin, Cook County Commissioner, 13th District, is behind these Commissioner foolish ordinances. To put it very bluntly - Suffredin hates people who own guns. He has made gun control his life’s work. He is on the board of the Illinois chapter of Handgun Control and is an antigun lobbyist in Springfield. Suffredin does not believe that anyone should be able to own a gun. Suffredin does not believe that hunting is a valid reason to own a gun - any gun. If you’re a target shooter, Suffredin wants to force you to take up a new hobby. Suffredin does not believe that you have the right to defend your home or family with a gun - he thinks you should call the police and roll the dice to see whether they get there in time. As far as Larry Suffredin is concerned, if you or your family are raped, robbed or murdered, that’s just your tough luck. Larry Suffredin is an enemy of every principle upon which our great nation was founded.

IF YOU THINK LARRY SUFFREDIN IS TOO BAD TO BE TRUE
GUESS AGAIN - HE WANTS TO BE YOUR STATE’S ATTORNEY

As far as Larry Suffredin is concerned, the only difference between you and a drug-dealing gang-banger is that you haven’t been arrested - yet. Suffredin is running for State’s Attorney for Cook County. His biggest campaign promise is to use “creative” ways to “get guns off the streets.” You can bet that, if elected, he’ll use the power of his office to harass every gun owner he can get his hands on. He’ll send cops to your door, hound you at work, and bring lawsuits against every gun dealer in Illinois. Larry Suffredin will not rest until every gun in America is melted down in the furnace of tyranny.

There are 3 ways you can help save your guns: 1) Call Larry Suffredin at (312 )603-6383 and tell him that you are a law-abiding gun owner and you object to his trampling your constitutional rights. 2) Call your Cook County Commissioner at (312) 603-5500 and tell him or her to vote against all county gun control schemes. 3) Vote AGAINST Larry Suffredin in the State’s Attorney primary February 5, 2008.

It appears that Larry Suffredin wants to make sure that the criminals have unrestricted access to all of the residents of Cook County.  Isn't that Criminal?
