Dick Durbin wants lower fuel prices and higher fuel taxes

Leave it to a Democrat to try to play both sides. Tonight I watched two videos from Dick Durbin's senate web site:

1. http://durbin.senate.gov/watchClip.cfm?clipId=d805af5c-1682-4acb-aa4a-a7a5df930ce1 - 5/28/2008 - Durbin talks about high gas prices, how it's hurting our state, and what he'd like to do about it (put the screws to "big business"). Of course, he doesn't admit that he's partially to blame for this situation.
2. http://durbin.senate.gov/watchClip.cfm?clipId=674b41e3-2664-4d0c-9e69-cc768bcde421 - 5/30/2008 - Durbin talks about Al Gore style Global Warming and what he'd like to do about it. He's clearly buying into Al Gore's Carbon Credit scheme (swindle would be a better word for it). What he didn't mention is the 1.2 Trillion Dollar Carbon tax and how much high it's going to drive gas prices.
   

So, what must be going through Dick's mind? Here's my take:

1. Oil Companies ("big business") are evil and have conspired together to raise gas prices to record highs. They have no concern for the economy. They just are out to "make a buck".
2. The government can pressure the Oil Companies into operating at a loss (or at least without profit) by telling them "it's the right thing to do". This will correct their "evil ways" and bring gas price back down to more palatable levels.
3. Al Gore knows more about Global Warming than any real scientist.
4. Al Gore's Carbon Credit scheme is the solution to all of our problems.
5. Because he'll be able to make the Oil Companies correct their "evil ways", we won't notice the 1.2 Trillion Dollar Carbon Tax that drove the fuel prices even higher.

Back to reality. What's really going on?

1. Oil Companies are like any other business. They expect to bring in more money than what they spend (that's called "profit"). They have to get the oil that becomes gasoline somewhere. Today, that means buying it from other countries (including those that are hostile to the US) that have worked together to drive prices higher. In true capitalism price gouging is quickly corrected by market forces. The Oil business has historically been a business of higher than average prices. Hence the phrase "strike it rich" in reference to discovering oil.
2. The Democrats have worked very hard to prevent the Oil Companies from obtaining their oil from domestic sources. Examples of untapped domestic sources blocked by Democrats include: ANWR.org, ANWR Democrats, oil shale in Colorado, etc. The Democrats have also worked hard to keep gas prices high. As Newt Gingrich Posted on 05/20/2008: Saudi Arabia Did More Last Week to Lower Gas Prices Than Congress Did.
3. Al Gore appears to have have no idea what he is talking about. As I have written about before, http://blog.justbob.us/2008/05/unstoppable-solar-cycles.html and http://blog.justbob.us/2008/04/happy-earth-day-al-gore.html Al is frequently putting the "cart before the horse". As seen in Unstoppable Solar Cycles, An inconvenient Truth, and The Global Warming Swindle. It appears that any real scientist that looks at our climate over a significant span of time (much, much more than 100 years) find that our climate changes over time, and this change has little to do with humans.
   
4. The Democrats believe that we can be "taxed into prosperity". With this in mind, a 1.2 Trillion Dollar tax should make us all rich (exactly how does that work anyway?). In reality, we will all be poorer (except a few politicians...).
5. Exactly how does a Carbon Credit "fix" "Global Warming". Does that mean that if you have enough money, you can just "fix" the "problem"? Why hasn't someone like Bill Gates bought enough Carbon Credits to solve it once and for all? Answer - if the problem is real (a real question), money won't fix it. If anything, it's an engineering issue, not a money issue (as in buying Carbon Credits, see: http://newsbusters.org/node/10989). Again, the reality: A Carbon Credit is a license to pollute, nothing more.

Untied Against Homeskooled Kidz

What idiot thinks that excluding home schooled children is a good idea? See:

Both California and Tennessee have done their best to shut down the home school movement in the past year. First California made it illegal to home school children unless the person teaching the child could show grade level certification. Then Tennessee’s Board of Education ruled that diplomas from home school affiliated organizations were invalid to show proof of high school graduation.

Now, Subway has gotten involved. The sandwich restaurant chain is holding a competition called “Every Sandwich Tells a Story.” Children can win prizes for their schools. But, the rules state, “Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.” [Emphasis added]

Doesn't this show just how afraid government sponsored schools (public schools, for those readers in Rio Linda) are of home schooling? Like virtually every government agency, they are deathly afraid of compitition. Only in public schools do they strive to achieve the lowest possible level of achievement (think, "outcome based education"). I guess they know that there isn't a Spelling Bee win in sight until home schooling is eliminated.

This is just my guess, but, I suspect that home schooling yields more conservatives than liberals. Of course, the liberals won't stand for that...

While Ahmadinejad has not done anything as starkly evil as cut the capital gains tax, he does deny the Holocaust, call for the destruction of Israel, deny the existence of gays in Iran and refuses to abandon his nuclear program despite protests from the United Nations. That's the only world leader we're not allowed to compare to Hitler.

Kudos to Congressman Green

I also want to take the time to congratulate a principled Democratic Representative who had the courage to break with his party leadership last week on the issue of domestic energy production.

Congressman Gene Green (D-TX) told CNBC, "We also need more exploration. But we really need to get more oil to the market, particularly from our own country. The best signal we can send to OPEC and anywhere else in the world is maybe not filing a lawsuit against them but actually saying 'we are going to start producing in our own country.'"

All Americans who are concerned about out-of-control prices and our vulnerability to energy blackmail by foreign dictators should appreciate and acknowledge Congressman Green's stand. The only question left is the one posed to Green by the CNBC anchor: "Can you convince the other wings of your party to think like you do?"

Every adult to carry "Carbon Ration Card"

From the "Governments' going too far department" (as reported by grassfire.org):

The Daily Mail is reporting that Britain's Environmental Audit Committee is pushing the idea that "every adult should be forced to use a 'carbon ration card' when they pay for petrol, airline tickets or household energy."

Climate Alarmism in England has gotten so bad that the British face the prospects of having to punch their "carbon card" every time they fill up or fly a plane!

The next thing to expect is that our Democratic-controlled Congress will jump on this bandwagon and push for a "Carbon Ration Card" here in the US as well. As we well know, the Democrats would hate to miss out on a bad idea that has been forced on people in other countries (they hate to be "left behind"). Of course, there will be an additional "tax" associated with so that "well meaning" Democrats can buy additional "Carbon Rations" (think "Carbon Credits"). Given Al Gore's house, he would be the first in line to get additional "Carbon Rations"...

The expansion of "Marriage" by the government is very a "slippery slope" sort of issue. At some point, all of these "special cases" will invalidate the original concepts, ruining it for everyone.

Think about it this way:

Shouldn't single people, that have no desire for a "partner" receive the same government benefits? Aren't single people being discriminated against?

We don't need bigger government. If anything, government needs to be smaller. How about we eliminate government sponsored marriage all together? Wouldn't that simplify things?

Unstoppable Solar Cycles

This is a "must see" video about "climate change". It clearly shows that there are factors at play that are much, much stronger than man in effecting climate change.

The chart showing the relationship between temperature and CO2 is also very interesting. Over the span off 600,000 years, temperature change has always led CO2 change by about 600 years.

I have to wonder what Al Gore thinks of this Video. Obviously, since it flies in the face of his agenda, he would likely pass it off as being false.

The scientists put it best: "Science is about being skeptical. There is a quest to always verify what we know."

What's most important here? Keep politics out out science. I want to see real science applied to this "issue". I'm not at all interested in the false "science" of those groups that are pushing for the "science" to fit their agenda.

Obviously man has an effect on the environment. But, it appears that many appear to think that we are far more powerful than we actually are...

Change

I just saw a piece about Obama on the Fox Report. I didn't hear the audio, so I don't know the context, but, there was a bunch of people holding banners saying "Change".

What came to mind, you ask?

All I could think was "how fitting!" The democrats are famous for taking our dollars and giving us nothing but change (if anything at all). At least Obama is up front about it. I just can't figure out why everyone appeared to be so happy about it.

As far a I am concerned, I just want to keep my dollars...

Happy Earth Day Al Gore!

I guess I'm a little slow, tonight I figured out how Al Gore is going to save the planet! He's intends to do it by killing off all of the humans (except of course, himself and his buddies). It appears the the agenda that he is pushing to "save the environment" is doing far more harm than good.

As said on http://palousitics.blogspot.com/2008/04/happy-earth-day-al-gore.html, "the rush to replace fossil fuels threatens global famine." Further on, we find that rain forests (the haven of the "greenie") are continuing to disappear, this time to grow crops to produce more ethanol (and even more greenhouse gases).

Given that he is driven by emotion and bad "science", he can't possible understand why all his "good" is doing more harm...

ISRA ALERT: FEAR AND LOATHING IN NAPERVILLE

LCAV attempts to persuade the public...

Organizers of a Naperville gun control rally were treated to a healthy dose of unintended consequences Monday night when firearm owners packed the rally by a better than ten to one ratio. Billed by organizers as an “educational forum,” the rally was actually nothing more than an airing of well-worn lies and dubious public opinion polls aimed at supporting gun control legislation now pending in the state capitol. During a Q&A session, attendees soundly rebuked the organizers for their divisive perpetuation of half-truths about the role of firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens.

Held at the Naperville campus of Northern Illinois University, the gun control rally was sponsored by the Illinois chapter of California-based gun control group, Legal Community Against Violence (LCAV). Moderating the forum was gun control movement veteran Steve Young. Young is the former Illinois chapter organizer of the now-defunct Bell Campaign. Young also served as the Illinois chapter head of the now-defunct Million Mom March. Of the approximately 175 attendees, all but a handful were gun rights supporters.

“It was gratifying to see such a large turnout by law-abiding gun owners,” said ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson. “It was probably the first time that many of them have come face to face with the people who want to take their guns away. This was an opportunity for them to hear first hand the deception and outright lies that are the underpinnings of the gun control movement. For nearly an hour, gun owners in the audience sat through presentations that assailed their sensibilities. When it came time for attendees to speak out, gun owners made it clear that they were not buying the gun control song and dance. I actually think the event organizers thought they’d win some converts last night. I’m sure they’re sorely disappointed this morning.”

“The LCAV claims to have not only broad, but active support for their gun control policies,” continued Pearson. “Yet, despite plenty of publicity, they were not able to generate much in the way of support for last night’s forum. Everywhere I looked, I saw IGOLD hats and NRA hats and ISRA sweatshirts. Our people packed the forum just like our people are lighting up the general assembly’s phone lines to express opposition to gun control bills now under consideration.”

“Probably the biggest blow to the LCAV’s credibility came when Young rolled out polling data that supposedly shows that better than 80% of Illinois gun owners support LCAV gun control policies,” said Pearson. “After the snickers died down, I asked gun-owning members of the audience who support LCAV gun control policy to please stand. Not a single person stood.”

“If the state’s gun owners support gun control as strongly as claimed by the LCAV, then why aren’t gun owners marching on Springfield to demand passage of gun control laws?” asked Pearson. “If 75-plus percent of gun owners want so-called ‘assault weapons’ banned, then why are they buying them up like hotcakes? If Illinois gun owners are as ‘anti-gun’ as the LCAV polling data suggests, then why do they even own guns in the first place? It just doesn’t make sense. But, then again, the ‘facts’ presented by the gun control movement rarely make much sense.”

This bill would ban most, if not all of the guns you own. Banned guns would include most semiautomatic rifles, pistols and shotguns. If this bill passes, you would be forced to suffer the indignity of registering with the State Police just like a sex offender. If you choose to preserve your dignity, then you would have to move either yourself or your guns out of state. A second bill, HB758 would ban private sales of firearms. That means that you would have to find an FFL to complete private sales from your collection. Both bills are clear infringements on your 2nd Amendment rights. Only you can protect your rights. You must take action, NOW!

Here’s what you must do to preserve your rights:

1. Call your legislator and POLITELY tell him or her that you oppose HB4357, and HB758.

San Francisco a Sanctuary city?

      let people know what a sanctuary city is all about...

Newsom says illegal aliens answering his call need not fear
deportation. "We are doing the right thing," he said.

Robert, this arrogant thumbing of the nose by SF City
officials to the established laws of our land and the blatant
disrespect for those citizens who will be required to foot
the bill for these illegals is reprehensible, and demands

I read today that you are undertaking an effort to turn San Francisco into a "Sanctuary City" for illegal aliens.

It's sad to learn that yet another government official is ignoring the rule of law in support of illegal aliens. I have to wonder "what's in it for you"? Given the exceptionally high costs involved, and the strain on law enforcement that this causes, you would have to be getting something in return.

I'm glad to hear that you have gone public with this. That way the law abiding citizens of you city can "get out" before their property values drop so low that they can't afford to leave. I'm sure that they will, given that they will have no interest in funding your illegal activities. The most "well to do" citizens (the ones that pay the highest taxes!) will be the first to go, as they typically have the most liquidity. As time continues, more and more tax payers will leave for other cities that follow the rule of law. Eventually, San Francisco will suffer the same fate as Detroit, MI, and be only a skeleton of what it once was. In the end, only the criminals will remain, of course, that includes the members of government that thought this was the "right thing".

My final question to you: Should this be a country in which every person learns to work, every person learns to save, every person learns to have a better future, and, by the way, is therefore responsible for working, saving, and creating a better future? Or is this a country where you shouldn't have to do all those things because it's too hard, and someone should take care of you? In which case, the question becomes: who's the someone, and why do you think they'll stay here?

Duncan made his appearance during a gun control rally sponsored by Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina's Catholic Church. Pfleger is best remembered for his speech at an earlier gun control rally during which he called for the murder of gun shop owners and state legislators who oppose gun control laws. Interestingly enough, at about the same time that Duncan was delivering his rant against the state's law abiding firearm owners, a report was released in "Catalyst Magazine" that indicates that just 51% of freshmen enrolled in Chicago public high schools stick it out to graduate. "Studies by the Chicago Police Department indicate that 88% of murders are committed by people with previous criminal records," commented ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "Likewise, those same reports show that about 76% of murder victims had records as well. Nonetheless, opportunists like Pfleger and Duncan persist in shifting the blame away from failed public policies and towards law-abiding hunters and sportsmen. The gun control measures these people advocate will never succeed in thwarting crime because they totally ignore the criminal element." "It's ironic that the truth about Duncan's administration was being released just as he was damning the state's law-abiding gun owners," continued Pearson. "Maybe if Duncan did a better job keeping his charges in school, they wouldn't be out on the streets beating, knifing and shooting one another to death. If Duncan had any sense of responsibility at all, he would have been at the microphone apologizing to the people of Illinois for wasting their time and tax dollars. By all rights, Arne Duncan should be returning 49% of his $200,000 annual salary to the Chicago treasury. He's doing half a job -- so he deserves half his pay." It appears that the keys words here are "public library". Notice that "public library" starts with "public"? Since when is what you do in a public place an issue of privacy? It must be that viewing child porn is only legal in a public library, as we all know, it's illegal everywhere else.

"vehicle barriers" for half of its claimed progress. Just one
problem -- illegal aliens can walk right through the vehicle barriers!

Capitol Commentary on DC v Heller - a light at the end of the tunnel?

Here's the lastest from the ISRA:

This edition will focus on the oral arguments in the DC gun ban. Headlines across the country are screaming that a majority of the court appears to back the individual right to bear arms. This revelation came on page 13 in reading the transcripts of the hearing. There Justice Kennedy often a swing vote on the Court referenced Article 1 Section 8 in dealing with militias and said this: “And my question is, the question before us, is how and to what extent did it supplement it (Article 1 Section 8). And in my view it supplemented it by saying there's a general right to bear arms quite without reference to the militia either way.” Reports from the hearing say no gasp was heard by those in attendance, but after reading those words in light of the peppering the DC lawyer was taking, you have to imaging the hearts of anti-gunners just sank like the Titanic. That would explain the shift in comments made by anti-gunners where they discarded the militia reading and now attempt to salvage their cause by hoping the Court will allow local communities and states to make their own laws, based upon their own political leanings. For months we have been hearing and reading on blogs arguments within the anti-gun community about letting the DC case go and taking the hit from the appellate court. The damage would be limited to DC and other laws around the country would be left intact and unchallenged. They saw the chance to lose and lose big. IF the questions and tone of the hearing are any indication they were right in their fears. Reading further in to the 90 pages other issues come up. At the very end limits on the number of guns comes up. On page 88 Justice Scalia shows his understanding of guns by rattling off what one might consider those in his collection of wish list. Going to the question of if the government could limit the number firearms a person could own. Kennedy again jumps in and presses the DC lawyer for an answer on that hypothetical question. Again DC tries to cast aspersions on the notion that of a standard test for which gun laws would be measured would be fair. Attempting to play on regional and political lines down playing a one size fits all ruling from the Court. This line of questions from Justice Scalia and Kennedy would appear to cast doubt on the validity of one-gun per month laws and other rationing schemes. There also was a fair amount of time in parsing the amendment, with several of the Justices looking at the wording as providing two or maybe even three rights. First that of States’ having a militia. Second, pun intended, that of the individual to possess and “keep” arms. Then with debate and discussion turning towards the word “bear”. As you read the transcripts it hints at carry laws, but never quite gets there. Could they find a third right in the carrying of firearms for self defense? Dunno but on two occasions they dance around the issue with the talk of bearing a gun for hunting on page 36. You can almost hear the concern in Justice Souter’s voice over the interpretation and parsing of the words. This strikes me as poetic justice. For years the anti-gun crowd have argued no right existed and parse commas and demand the militia be all controlling. Yet what took place at the Court was anything but. With justices saying that the militia was one of at least two parts of the Amendment, and parsing out the individual words of keep and bear. Framing it in distinct individual rights for each. The antis’ hearts had to sink lower as the debate wore on. An almost comical exchange takes place with Chief Justice Roberts attempting to describe the process of awakening to a burglar breaking into ones’ home and trying to get a trigger lock off of a firearm. If Justice Roberts’ line of thinking and questioning would prevail, then laws that prevent people from having firearms available for self defense in their homes would be struck down. Laws that hold a gun owner civilly liable for kids that get a hold of firearms and injure someone could be legal. But the overriding thought of the day is probably best summed up by Justice Roberts question “What is reasonable about a total ban on possession?” With that, it appears that whole sale gun bans will not stand the scrutiny of the court. The court also dove into the issue of machine guns and licensing. My layman’s view is that the court may well say that the regulation of certain specific guns, like full autos is permissible. This may have been an attempt to keep Justice Kennedy on the side of the individual rights interpretation and not push him over to the other side. It would also appear that the court is leaning towards a ruling, or at least hinting that laws aimed and discouraging citizens from exercising their rights may find a dim view with the court. An example might be that the FOID card at $10 is acceptable to the court, but the $500 FOID card is not. One thing is certain, that with a ruling due out in June, more litigation is sure to follow. But that sound you hear isn’t just Spring, it sounds like freedom.

Parking:	Metered on-street parking is available to the south of the Howlett Building. The meters accept quarters for up to a 9 hour period.
Better Travel: Bus Info	Forget the hassle of parking near the Capitol! IGOLD will have buses going to Springfield from strategic locations throughout Illinois. Ride the bus, ride with your friends. Apparel:	Wear whatever you'd feel comfortable in while you are meeting your representatives, and don't forget you'll also be representing the rest of your fellow Illinois gun owners. Business casual is suggested, dress up if you want. We suggest that you don't wear any camo.
Security:	After the tragedy in 2005, there are now metal detectors in the Capitol Building that you will have to pass through on your way in, so please think ahead for this: no knives, novelty ammo keyfobs, etc. Bring proper identification.

ISRA Alert - State Ammo Ban

ISRA Alert: AMMUNITION BAN BILLS ON THE MOVE IN ILLINOIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

A pair of ammunition ban bills are up for hearing in the House Executive Committee this week. If enacted, either of these bills would effectively ban the purchase of ammunition in Illinois. The bills in question are HB 4269 sponsored by Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago), and HB 4349 sponsored by Rep. Naomi Jakobsson (D-Champaign). Here is what passage of either of these bills would mean to you: 1. Ammunition manufacturers would be required to imprint a secret code on cartridge casings so that the purchaser of the ammunition could be identified. 2. When you purchase ammunition, that secret code would be registered to your name. 3. All your ammunition purchases would be registered with the Illinois State Police. 4. You would be responsible for all eternity for ammunition registered to you. 5. It would be in your best interest to destroy all expended ammunition casings because an unaccounted for empty casing could be used to frame you for a crime you did not commit. 6. You would have to surrender all unregistered ammunition you now own to the Illinois State Police. 7. Reloading would be banned. 8. The Illinois Department of Revenue would be authorized to place a tax on ammunition and raise that tax any time for any reason. 9. Taxes and increased manufacturing costs would raise the price of a box of .45 ammo to $200 or more. 10. Gun ownership would become too costly for most people.   WHAT YOU MUST DO TO HELP SAVE YOUR GUN RIGHTS: 1. Call Rep. Naomi Jakobsson’s offce at (217) 558-1009 and POLITELY tell the person that answers that you are a law-abiding gun owner and you would oppose Rep. Jakobsson’s attempt to ban ammunition. 3. Call each of the following members of the House Executive Committee and POLITELY tell whoever answers the phone that you OPPOSE HB4269 and HB4349 and that you would like them to vote against those bills in the Executive Committee.
